Forms of Marriage Monogamy: It is a form of marriage where the man remains in marriage with a single woman at a time. Polygamy: It is defined as a marriage between one person and two or more spouses simultaneously. It has three forms: Polygyny: One husband and two or more wives. Polyandry: One wife and two or more husbands. Group Marriage: Marriage of several men to several women. Other Forms of Marriage Endogamous: It is the custom of restricting the marriage within one's own group. Exogamous: A rule of marriage where one must marry outside his own group. Intercaste Different caste Child Marriage It is a practice of getting children married before they attain their puberty. Social Customs related to Marriage 1. India Important social institution approved and permitted by customs and laws. In all community, marriage is essential obligation. Marriage is important religious ceremony. In all community marriage, they are following their own rituals. Marriage marks the beginning of a life partnership between the two people involved. Marriage customs of Jain and Sikh communities are similar to Hindu. Marriage in most cases involves material and non-material transaction between families. The widower usually has a right to remarry. In 1856, the Hindu Widow Remarriage Act legalized remarriage. Also, after marriage, the wife usually moves to her husband's home. The age-old concept of a large family is being replaced by a small family norm.
