Patient or Client Care with External Bleeding Initial assessment Assess the scene and ensure it’s safe for you and the injured person. Apply direct pressure to the bleeding wound. Raise the injured part above the level of the heart, if possible. Never remove any dressings or bandages that have been applied. Once the scene is safe, begin ABC (airway, breathing, circulation) Check the person’s breathing and circulation by taking a pulse and assessing skin colour, temperature, and condition. Controlling External Bleeding Major treatments of controlling external bleeding Direct pressure Elevation Pressure point Patient or Client Care with External Bleeding Other methods Cold application is least effective. Administration of medication. Direct Pressure Apply direct pressure to the wound until bleeding is controlled. Once the bleeding has been controlled, bandage the wound. Remove the dressing first, then bandage the wound once it has been placed on the wound. Pressure Point Apply direct pressure, first with a gloved hand followed by a dressing and bandage to continue necessary compression. Elevation Elevation is the injured side being kept as the injured side above the level of the heart. Internal Bleeding Internal bleeding is bleeding that occurs inside the body. The bleeding does not exit the body.
