Types of Bone Marrow
Two types of bone marrow are present:
Yellow colour bone marrow
Red colour bone marrow
1) Yellow Colour Bone Marrow:
It is present in fat.
It is inactive.
2) Red Colour Bone Marrow:
It is active.
Red bone marrow produces RBC after birth.
In adults, only red bone marrow produces RBC after birth.
Stages of Erythropoiesis:
Hemocytoblast
Proerythroblast
Basophilic erythroblast
Polychromatophilic erythroblast
Orthochromatophilic erythroblast
Reticulocyte
RBC
Changes during erythropoiesis:
Decrease in size
Nucleus disappears
Increase in hemoglobin content
Loss of organelles
**1. Haemocytoblast**
* Size: 18-20 microns
* Nucleus: Large nucleus with numerous nucleoli
* Cytoplasm: Scanty basophilic cytoplasm
* It undergoes mitosis to form proerythroblast
**2. Proerythroblast**
* Size: 15-20 microns
* Nucleus: Large nucleus with nucleoli
* Cytoplasm: Scanty basophilic cytoplasm
* It undergoes mitosis to form basophilic normoblast
**3. Early Normoblast**
* Size: 10-15 microns
* Nucleus: Small nucleus with nucleoli
* Cytoplasm: More amount of basophilic cytoplasm
* It undergoes mitosis to form intermediate normoblast
**4. Intermediate Normoblast**
* Size: 10-15 microns
* Nucleus: Cart wheel-like nucleus, and nucleoli is absent
* Cytoplasm: Polychromatophilic cytoplasm
* This does not undergo further mitosis division.
