Undernutrition
Undernutrition includes Stunting (low height for age), wasting (low weight for height), underweight (low weight for age) and micronutrient deficiency (lack of vital micronutrients (vitamins and minerals).
Stunting
Low height for age is known as stunting.
It is the result of chronic undernutrition.
Usually associated with poor socioeconomic conditions, poor maternal health and nutrition, frequent illness, and inappropriate feeding and care of infants and young children.
Stunting impairs physical and cognitive development of the affected individuals.
Wasting
Low weight for height is known as wasting.
It indicates acute decreased weight and severe weight loss because a person has not had enough food or has had an infection, disease.
Such as diarrhea.
A young child who is infected with a virus or bacteria may experience a range of symptoms, such as diarrhea, but treatment is possible.
Underweight is low weight for age.
Individuals with low weight for age are known as underweight.
People who are underweight may be stunted, wasted or both.
