The Reticular Activating System The reticular (ren-TICK- you - ler ) activaring system (RAS) is part of the reticular formation. It sish nght at the base of the brain unside the spinal cord. Here is a good way to get a feel for what it is like: Outatwo inch square of a garden hose (the spinal column). Pretend that you unsert the hose into the base of the braw, and you now nave some loka of where the BAsis and a very rough dea of what it looks uke. In fact, the word reticular actually means "ner," and the FAS is a kind of net that "catches" nesve umpulses. Nerve impulses from the braw to the body and from the body to the brain pass through the fAsso that it can take a reading of the level of activity througnout the whole system. The KAs regulates how alert or how sleepy we are. It a lot things are going on, many impulses arrive from the body und brain, and alertness increases. If everything is quiet sensitive to steady sounds. Thus, It you go usten to a let- ture somewhere and the speaker talks very slowly and dully, little change is noted by the RAs, So it starts to put you to sleep. If you are trying to get to sleep at night and count sheep passing by, that endless rhythm mates you drowsy. Drugs used for surgery dramatically slow down the RAS so It "doesn't care" about pan signals and thus won't alert the brain about them.
