How many of you have taken an online class in high school or college?
Today I’m going to talk about why online education is most beneficial
when combined with traditional education
We’re all students, so this affects all of us
I’ve taken online classes in high school… good in theory but didn’t go
well
My main points are:
a. Advantages of online education
b. Advantages of face to face education
c. How we can combine them to benefit from both
Advantages of online education
a. Time flexibility
i. One of the most attractive features of online school is the
flexibility it offers
ii. Online students don’t have to be in a classroom every day,
which allows them to work whenever it’s convenient for them.
For students who are able to effectively manage their time, this
can be very convenient
b. Differences in students
i. provides an equal opportunity for educational experiences for
many different types of students
ii. Students who struggle in school can get behind in class if they
don’t understand an assignment. They often won’t speak up and
say they need help. On the other hand, more advanced students
may be able to finish an assignment quickly and are ready to
move on long before their other classmates. With online classes,
the advanced students can immediately move on to the next
lesson without having to wait for their classmates, and slower
students can take their time to actually learn the material
Advantages of traditional face-to-face educationa. Human Interaction
i. In a traditional class, students are with a physical teacher—this
provides opportunities for spontaneous discussions and active III.

participation. Students taking online classes don’t get this
personal communication.
ii. According to the Quarterly Review of Distance Education,
isolation from others during the learning process can reduce
motivation, and the student is more likely to finish the course if
they take it in person.
b. Teachers’ style and manner
i. In traditional learning environments, students benefit from
sustained contact with their instructors. Every instructor has a
different style and manner. The teacher’s personality and
teaching style can motivate/encourage students
ii. I had a lot of teachers in high school that were able to make
class really fun—my APUSH class was the most difficult class
I’ve ever taken, but my teacher was able to make it interesting
and make me want to come to class every day. I probably would
have given up from boredom if I’d taken it online
c. Students can’t manage time properly!!!! Personally, I procrastinate
everything and do everything the week before it’s due…and I know a
lot of other people do this as well, don’t lie
By combining online and F2F learning, we can create the most beneficial
learning environment for students.
a. Blended learning: combining face-to-face lessons with online
activities. Once you understand what each method does best, you can
combine the things technology does best and the things traditional
classes do best to get the best of both worlds.
b. Classes that have implemented blended learning scored higher on
their end-of-year exams than those that didn’t use technology.
Conclusion- Incorporating technology into traditional classrooms is the
most effective way to learn, rather than fully online courses.
I went over the benefits of both online and face-to-face instruction, and
explained why blended learning is the best option because it combines
both.
So, next time you’re considering taking an online course, make sure to
ask yourself if this is really the best option for you.
