HORACE MANN: What an honor to share this table with such minds. Builders of change, seekers of justice, champions of progress. Tonight as our main courses await allow me to offer a toast not just to the meal but to the causes we have each fought for. As for myself, I have always believed that education is the cornerstone of democracy. Without it the citizens are vulnerable to deception manipulation, even tyranny. In Massachusetts I witnessed children of the poor with no books no teachers and no future. That struck me deeply. I remember walking through small rural towns where schoolhouses were falling apart and overworked teachers struggled to instruct dozens of students without even the most basic supplies. When I took charge of the state’s education board I pushed for a longer school year proper training for teachers and safe, updated schoolhouses. I saw every child rich or poor, boy or girl as worthy of learning. Education is not a privilege It is a right. I often said and still believe that a republic cannot stand on ignorance. We cannot expect citizens to vote wisely to participate meaningfully in life if we do not first equip them with knowledge. A child with knowledge becomes an adult with power. An educated mind is a free mind. I faced opposition, of course. Some feared that education would upend the social order. Others argued it was too costly, or that it would fail to reach those most in need. But I knew that investing in public education was the most patriotic act one could take. For every dollar spent on a schoolhouse, we save far more in courtrooms and prisons. Let me share one moment that stays with me. I visited a small school in a poor Boston neighborhood. The children wore patched clothes and many had no shoes. But when I asked them what they had learned their eyes lit up. One boy talked about a poem about liberty another girl described how the planets moved around the sun. Their curiosity so endless proved to me that intellect is not limited to wealth. It is boundless if only we nourish it. This table here is filled with leaders, reformers, visionaries but our legacies will not be found only in speeches or policies. They will live on in the minds of those we educate. So I raise this glass not just to each of you but to everybody every student, teacher and every school striving to light the way. Let us never forget the classroom is where democracy begins. FREDERICK DOUGLASS: Mr. Mann, your vision is noble. But if I may, I must speak a hard truth. For far too long, millions of my people—Black men, women, and children—were denied even the right to learn. I was born into slavery. It was not just discouraged it was illegal to teach someone like me to read or write. Why? Because literacy meant danger A literate slave could question could resist and could have hope. Ignorance was not just a byproduct of slavery it was enforced with fear and with cruelty. I taught myself in secret piecing together scraps of knowledge in stolen moments. I remember tracing letters in the dirt begging poor white children to share their books, pretending not to care when a master walked by. And with every word I learned I felt the chains around my mind weaken. Each sentence I read was a small act of rebellion. Each word was a piece of freedom. Education is indeed freedom. But before we can talk about schoolhouses we must acknowledge the brutal legacy upon which this nation was built. The auction block the whip, the stolen children, this was the curriculum given to my people. Before we speak of enlightenment, we must speak of dehumanization. When I escaped bondage and became a free man I did not stop at literacy. I turned it into a weapon for justice. I wrote, I spoke, I debated because I knew that the mind, once awakened cannot be enslaved again. That is why I fought for abolition and that is why I continued to fight for Black education even after emancipation. It was not enough to be free in your body. We had to be free in mind. We had to build our own schools hire our own teachers, fight for access to the institutions from which we were barred for generations. And still today that struggle continues. Education cannot be called equal until every child regardless of color or class has the same chance to thrive. And democracy, Mr. Mann cannot flourish while racism festers in its roots. So yes let us build schools. But let them be open to all let their doors be wide, their books plentiful, their teachers just and wise. Only then will we begin to repair what slavery broke. Only then can we say this nation is truly committed to liberty and justice for all. ANDREW JACKSON: Gentlemen, you speak of ideals, but I speak of reality. This nation was young restless, and full of ambition. It needed room to grow The Native tribes held vast lands in the Southeastfertile land, rich with promise lands we believed essential for farming, for settlement, for improving the strength of the Union. My policy of Indian Removal controversial though it remains, was not born of cruelty but of conviction. I still believe that the survival of the American people depended on expansion. The states were growing our people multiplying but tensions were rising. Something had to give. My decision was made with the future of the nation in mind. Now, I will not deny the pain that came with it. The Trail of Tears a tragic chapter, no doubt we saw thousands of Native men, women, and children forced from their ancestral homes. Some died from disease hunger, and exposure to dieseses. Others lost their way of life entirely. But understand this I saw it not as an act of heartlessness, but of necessity. I believed that by relocating the tribes west of the Mississippi, we could avoid endless bloodshed between settlers and Native communities. I saw no one else doing anything so I sought a solution no matter how flawed. Leadership demands difficult choices. It means placing the needs of the many above the comfort of the few. I heard the critics then and I still hear them now but I acted to preserve the Union to make room for growth to secure our borders and keep the peace between rival populations. The land we gained gave birth to farms, towns, and opportunity for thousands. It helped define American identity and ensured our place on the world stage. Yet I do not sit here blind to its cost. The cultural suffering everything that happened, yes it weighs on the conscience of this nation. But I ask you Would this nation have survived without bold action? History will debate my choices as it should. But do not mistake conviction for cruelty. I did what I believed was necessary to ensure that the American people did not fall during this hard time. You may not agree but you must understand. So as you raise your glasses to liberty, to education, to justice do not forget the burdens of leadership. The weight of history is not easily carried but someone must carry it. SUSAN B. ANTHONY: Mr. Douglass, your words stir the soul as they always have. I remember many times standing beside you on the circuit, our voices raised together against slavery and for universal suffrage. I too believe education is essential. But what good is knowledge if you have no voice in your government? When I began my work women were expected to remain silent politically invisible. We had no vote no legal identity apart from our husbands, no right to our own wages even to custody of our children. We were told our place was in the home not in the halls of power. I traveled this nation for decades speaking, writing, organizing. I co-founded the National Woman Suffrage Association with my dearest friend Elizabeth Cady Stanton. Together, we challenged unjust laws, petitioned Congress, and demanded that the promise of the Declaration of Independence“all men are created equal”be extended to women. People mocked us. Politicians dismissed us. Even friends in the abolitionist movement sometimes told us to wait our turn. But I ask you all when has justice ever arrived on time for those who need it most? Should the oppressed wait in line for freedom? I recall being arrested in 1872 for voting. Imagine that a citizen of the United States, hauled away like a criminal for casting a ballot. At my trial, I was denied the right to speak in my own defense. But after the verdict, I spoke anyway. I said Resistance to tyranny is obedience to God. And I meant it. Let me be clear women do not seek superiority. We seek equality. The right to vote, to learn, to earn, to speak freely and live fully. I have seen women raise families, teach classrooms, run farms, even keep whole communities together yet be denied the dignity of citizenship. And to those who say the world is not ready, I say it is only by bold action that the world is changed. Our daughters and granddaughters must grow up knowing they are full citizens of this republic not shadows behind men, but voices of their own. So I raise my glass not only to the men at this table, but to the women whose names history may forget, but whose labor has sustained every movement for justice. Let us press forward until every woman stands equal in law, in life, and at the ballot box. HENRY CLAY: Miss Anthony, Mr. Douglass, Mr. Mann each of you speaks with conviction, and I respect your struggles deeply. You fight to make your voices heard, for minds enlightened, for chains broken. But I must remind you all that none of your efforts noble as they are could have taken root in a fractured Union. You see, I spent my political life as a man standing at the edge staring into the depths of disunion. While others fought for ideals I fought to keep the stage upon which those ideals could even be argued. In my day, the states were like rival siblings each holding old grudges and being suspicious of the others. Slavery divided us, yes, but so too did geography, commerce, and pride. In that chaos, I found my cause the union through compromise. I was not blind to the evils of slavery Mr. Douglass. Nor was I deaf to the pleas of justice, Miss Anthony. But I saw what disunion would mean bloodshed chaos, perhaps even the death of this grand American experiment. So I crafted the Missouri Compromise in 1820. It wasn't perfect no compromise ever is—but it kept the peace. It bought us time. Time for debate, for reason, for movements like yours to grow. And when the nation threatened to splinter again I offered the Compromise of 1850 a fragile truce, yes, but one that preserved the Union a little longer. I remember the Senate chamber on those days. Tension like thunderclouds. Men glaring across the aisle as though ready for war. But I stood and said we must talk, not fight. We must reason, not rage. You may call me cautious, But what good is emancipation Mr. Douglass, if the Union dissolves before it can be declared? What value is suffrage, Miss Anthony, if the nation itself is in ruin? And Mr. Mann what becomes of education when schools are burned in civil war? My compromises were not meant to preserve injustice but to contain it until everyone could catch up. I believed yes it may have been naïve but that with time, with growth, America would evolve. That your voices would rise and be heard but only if the Union stood firm. Do not mistake me. I do not defend slavery. I owned slaves in my youth and came to see it as a moral wrong. But I believed abolition must be gradual done through legislation, not fire and blood. My vision was of a country that healed its wounds, not tore them open. Yes, history judges compromises harshly. But it often forgets the collapse they prevented. You call for justice—I called for peace. Both are needed. So I lift my glass not in defense of inaction, but in honor. May this table remind us that it is through conversation, not conquest, that nations rise. And may future generations say not that we chose the easy path, but that we chose to hold together long enough for justice to find its voice. FREDERICK DOUGLASS: But Mr. Clay, every time this nation compromised, it did so at the cost of Black lives. The Missouri Compromise the Fugitive Slave Act these were not neutral policies. They sanctioned my people’s suffering. You speak of compromise as preservation, but I speak of it as delay delay of justice, of freedom, of dignity. Every compromise that kept the Union intact also kept Black Americans in chains. While you debated lines on a map, we wore the scars of the lash. While you argued in marbled halls, we hid in shadows, praying to see the morning sun without the weight of shackles. I was born into slavery. I know firsthand what it means to have your humanity reduced to property. It was illegal to teach someone like me to read or write because knowledge was dangerous. A literate slave could resist, could dream, could demand more. Ignorance was enforced with cruelty. And yet, I taught myself in secret. Each word I learned chipped away at my bondage. Literacy was my rebellion. And education, as Mr. Mann rightly says, is indeed freedom but that freedom cannot grow in soil soaked with compromise. You say you believed abolition should come gradually. But how long must a man wait to be free? How many generations must suffer so that the powerful can remain comfortable? Slavery was not a wound to be bandaged it was a cancer to be cut out. And every day it stayed it grew. I do not question your motives Mr. Clay. I believe you acted with care and concern. But I must challenge the results. The compromises you offered did not save the nation for us they postponed justice and preserved a system that dehumanized millions. Slavery needed not time it needed courage. The courage to declare that all men are created equal and to mean it. So when we speak of unity let us not forget what that unity cost. The voices that were silenced. The bodies broken. The families torn apart. There can be no middle ground on human rights. You cannot negotiate freedom. It is either granted or it is denied. We gather tonight not just as figures of history, but as reminders of the choices made and the consequences born by others. Let this table not be one of polite avoidance, but of hard truths. If the Union was saved, let it be said it was done at a terrible price. And let us vow that future generations will not barter away justice in the name of order. That we will not again choose delay when freedom calls for immediacy. JAMES K. POLK: I agree with you all but yet, while you all discuss rights and reforms, I look at results. Under my presidency, we brought the Oregon Territory into the Union. We won the Mexican American War and gained the vast Southwest. We extended America from sea to shining sea a phrase that captures more than just geography. It embodies the vision of a nation destined to grow, and to become a true continental power. This expansion was not simply about claiming land on a map. It was about creating opportunities for millions of Americans who sought a better life, farmers, merchants, laborers, and families eager to build communities and futures in new places. With new territory came new challenges, yes, but also new promises. The West was more than wilderness it was a canvas for American ambition. With the acquisition of the Oregon Territory, we secured a foothold in the Pacific Northwest. This opened more doors for trade, helped to establish important ports, and created routes for people moving westward. The Oregon Trail became a path of hope for many, a symbol of the American spirit to explore and settle new lands. The Mexican American War, though controversial, secured the territories of California, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Nevada, and parts of Colorado and Wyoming. These lands were rich in resources and strategically vital. They would fuel the economic growth of the nation for decades to come, from gold rushes to agriculture, to the rise of new cities and infrastructure. Trade routes followed this expansion knitting together the country from coast to coast. Railroads stretched across the continent, bringing goods, people, and ideas at speeds unimaginable before. Millions of Americans found new homes and new hopes in these lands. They built farms, towns, and industries, contributing to a rapidly growing economy. This growth strengthened the nation internally and projected American power externally. A stronger, larger America could hold its own on the world stage, competing with European powers for influence and respect. Expansion I argue, is not a sin when it brings growth, opportunity, and unity. It is the natural course of a young and vigorous nation. The future is not something to be waited for it must be claimed, forged through action and resolve. To stand still is to fall behind. Manifest Destiny was not merely a slogan it was a declaration of purpose, a commitment to realize America’s full potential. Of course, expansion brought its difficulties and controversies, including conflicts over the rights of indigenous peoples and the spread of slavery. These are matters for careful governance and law. But they do not negate the fact that the growth we achieved laid the foundation for America’s transformation into a global power. In the end, my legacy is one of bold vision and decisive action. While others debated ideals I delivered results. I expanded the borders, the economy, and the promise of this nation. And I believe that history will judge us not only by our words but by the tangible progress we leave behind. So let us raise a glass to the future bold, expansive, and bright. For America’s destiny is to grow, to prosper, and to shine across the continent, a beacon of opportunity for generations to come. DOROTHEA DIX: Mr. Polk, your rails and roads may have stretched across this vast land uniting coasts, connecting cities, and opening new frontiers but I ask you, did you ever pause to look inside the very cities and towns those rails connected? Did you truly see the broken souls who live among us the forgotten men, women, and children confined behind cold, iron bars, locked away from society? I made it my mission to see those places others ignored. I visited the dark, filthy institutions called asylums, jails, and almshouses places where men and women suffering from mental illness were treated worse than animals. Chained to walls confined to tiny, unheated rooms, sometimes left naked and starving. Where the cries of despair echoed through the halls, unanswered by the world beyond those walls. And it was not just the adults. I saw children imprisoned alongside hardened criminals, thrown into cages like beasts, without education, care, or hope. Imagine a child, fragile and frightened, locked in a cell meant for criminals, their minds and spirits shattered before they even had a chance to grow. This was the reality for thousands across our nation. You speak proudly of progress in expanding territory of laying down railroads and opening trade routes. But progress is not measured solely by the miles of land claimed or the number of miles of track laid. True progress lies in the heart of how we care for the most vulnerable among us. How do we treat those who cannot advocate for themselves? How do we protect those who suffer in silence? A nation that builds grand cities and industries but turns its back on its weakest citizens has not truly advanced. It has only built things that mask the pain beneath. We cannot call ourselves a just and humane society while cruelty and neglect reign behind asylum walls. I traveled across states, appealing to legislatures, confronting officials, and pleading for reform. Slowly doors began to open. New hospitals were built, designed with light fresh air, and compassion in mind. Laws were passed to protect the rights of those with mental illness and to separate children from criminals. This was not an easy fight. There was resistance fear, ignorance, and stigma. Many believed that those suffering from mental illness were possessed or morally weak. Many thought it acceptable to lock them away without care. But I saw the truth that with proper treatment, with kindness and dignity, many could recover, they could live with purpose and joy. Mr. Polk, expansion of borders without expansion of humanity is hollow. We can claim every inch of land, build every railway, but if we fail to lift up those crushed beneath poverty, disease, and neglect, our nation is incomplete. Progress means building not only railroads and cities but hospitals and homes where care and compassion are the foundations. It means seeing and hearing those whom society would rather forget. It means demanding justice for every soul, no matter how broken or invisible. So while you celebrate the reach of America from sea to shining sea I ask that we also commit to reaching hearts and minds with understanding and care. Let us measure the greatness of this nation not by the acres we possess, but by the kindness we extend and the dignity we restore. That is the progress I envision a nation where no one is forgotten, where no soul is chained in darkness, and where the promise of liberty and justice truly belongs to all. THOMAS EDISON: Each of you speaks passionately of movements of laws passed and rights won and rightly so. These are the foundations upon which society advances, the scaffolding of justice and reform. But I tell you this the future is not built by laws alone nor by speeches or treaties. The future is shaped and illuminated by invention. Consider this every great leap forward in history has been fueled by the spark of human ingenuity. It is the light in the darkness the engine that drives change faster than any political debate or social movement alone. Think of the electric light the phonograph, and the motion picture three inventions that have already begun to transform our lives in ways once thought impossible. The electric light banishes the night extending our days and allowing us to work read and gather long after the sun has set. It creates safer streets brighter schools and thriving cities. The phonograph captures voices and music, preserving moments and memories for generations. Motion pictures bring stories to life, connecting people across distances and cultures in ways words on a page never could. These tools equip us and redefine how we live, how we learn, and how we connect. They make the world closer and open new avenues for communication and understanding. Machines multiply our labor and increase our productivity. They level the playing field offering opportunities for those who might otherwise be left behind. The farmer can use electricity to irrigate fields more efficiently. The factory worker benefits from mechanized tools that ease burden on him but also boost output. The teacher gains access to new educational tools that make learning engaging and accessible. But invention is not a force unto itself it is a choice. I do not believe in progress that leaves people behind or widens the gap between rich and poor. Technology must uplift not oppress. It should empower every individual regardless of station or circumstance to live better, work smarter, and dream bigger. Too often, innovation is seen as the domain of the elite new machines and ideas that profit a few while displacing many. That is not the future I envision. The power of invention belongs to all who seek a better life. It is our responsibility to ensure that technology serves humanity, not the other way around. In my own work, I have been driven by this belief. The inventions I create are not just about gadgets or gizmos they are about people. About families gathering under the glow of electric light. About children listening to music on a phonograph and discovering worlds beyond their own. About workers whose toil is made easier, whose lives gain new dignity. Moreover, innovation can spark new industries and jobs, creating opportunities where none existed before. It can break down barriers between nations races, and classes by providing tools for education, communication, and empowerment. But this future requires vision and responsibility. So while you debate movements and laws, I want you to see invention as a partner in progress. Together, laws and inventions will shape a brighter tomorrow one where every person has the chance to thrive in a society energized by both justice and discovery.
