See syllabus for more details. • Grading policy – Students need to pass the lab (>150 pts/250pts) in order to pass the course. Assignments submitted late but w/in 24 hrs will lose 25%, and after 24hrs, there will be NO points. • Academic integrity – (next couple of slides) Academic Integrity What action is considered academic dishonesty? In her biology lab, she worked in a group of four to complete a human physiology experiment and was asked to individually write a lab report based on the experiment. When she was brainstorming for the lab report, she discussed with her group members to exchange their ideas and knowledge. Then, she went back home and started writing her lab report which included some of the information she got through the meeting with her group members. AC ! ! Group assignments are designed to help you practice collaboration, verbal discussion of concepts and peer review. Please take this opportunity to develop these skills! However, when you hand in an assignment it NEEDS to be in your own words. Yes, discuss with your partner, but then write it yourself. This is a SKILL and THIS is your opportunity to practice it! Primary Literature: The published work that first generates a set of data. This is the literature you should be citing. Secondary Literature: This is generally referred to as a review. It collects information in a particular field and basically catches people up on the state of research in that field. These are generally not cited except for very generalized statements about broad common knowledge subjects. Abstract: Provides overview of the paper. Provides a rational, states research question, and gives a quick summary of results and relevance. Introduction: Provides background information for the reader to understand the relevance and rationale for the experiments being carried out Materials and Methods: Provides specific information about the techniques used in the experiments. Should provide enough information for the experiments to be repeated. Results: This is the data that is generated in the paper. Discussion: This puts the results into context with the rest of the current data in the field. In this journal (PNAS) the results and the discussion are presented together. In some journals there are separated. References: Provides information that allows the reader to look up the information referred to in the paper.
