BIOL 230W - Week 11 The Extracellular Matrix 2 functions of ECM = adhesion (how cells attach) and cell signaling Adhesion helps with mechanical support, attachment to ECM, and motility -> Signaling helps cells grow, integrate into tissues, and positional information Focal Adhesions: cell and ECM interactions with each other, integral proteins Collagen fibrils (made of 3 protein helix) link together to make collagen fibers "chart of 3 components from packet Integrin is activated when it is bound to an ECM component which leads to a conformational change from bent (inactive) to straight (active) -> Ligands that bind to integrin contain an RGD peptide motif (3 AAs) which allows integrin to recognize and bind to the ligand The Extracellular Matrix pt 2 Cells make fibronectin (doesn't polymerize) in inactive form and export it -> Contain RGD peptide motif which is how integrin recognizes it for binding -> binding allows fibronectin to stretch (active) and allow it to polymerize
