BIOL 230W - Week 13 Cellular Metabolism — In single cell organisms, nutrients are engulfed via phagocytosis and is degraded by the lysosome, macromolecules transported into cytoplasm — 2 types active transport = primary (use energy), secondary (carrier mediated) — 2 types of passive transport = carrier mediated (binds) and channel mediated Cellular Metabolism pt 2 — Oxidation is a loss of electrons, reduction is a gain of electrons —> energy made by transfer of electrons is used to make ATP — Carbohydrates broken down into glucose-6-phosphate (stored as glycogen) —> G6P is broken down into pyruvic acid, then to acetyl CoA, then to CO2 —> If we are low on energy we go through glycolysis, if high, gluconeogenesis — If change in free energy is close to 0, the reaction is at equilibrium meaning the reaction will occur spontaneously (can occur in either direction) —> if change in delta g is negative, reaction is irreversible
