LSAT PREP Sage Training – Week 1 Logical Reasoning Section – For, Since and Because and Advanced Context Context:    Context: information related and important to but not part of the argument o Example:I know you love Fluffers but remember that all dogs are mortal and Fluffers is a dog. Therefore, Fluffers is mortal. Context is simply background information. Could be someone else’s argument. o Will have to figure out premise and conclusion in other person’s argument. But, Although, However:  Typically mean we are switching from context into argument. o Example: All jedi are powerful. However, Tom who is not a Jedi, is powerful. Therefore, one does not have to be a Jedi to be powerful. Some People Say:   Common way for logical reasoning passages to begin. Always introduces someone else’s argument. o Example:Some managers believe that the best way to incentivize employees to work harder is to intimidate them. But employees who are intimidated cannot concentrate on their work. Therefore, there is probably a better way to incentivize employees to work harder.  But is where the argument begins. For, Since & Because    For, Since, because introduce premises. They also appear in a sentence where a conclusion is also present. o Sometimes only separated by a comma.  Example: Poseidon is furious , for it was his temple that was desecrated.  Poseidon is Furious = Conclusion  Temple that was desecrated = Premise Sometimes they don’t indicate premises. o Example: I’m hugging you because I miss you.  This is a fact not an argument.
