LSAT PREP Sage Training – Week 2 Foundational Concepts – Grammar and Referential Phrases Basic Grammar Concepts:  Subject, Predicate, and Details o Also called modifiers and embedded clauses Subject, Predicate, Details  The Subject: o The thing the sentence is about. o The Noun  Predicate: o Almost always a verb. It tells you something about the subject. o What about the subject?  Details: o Sometimes in “modifiers” like adjectives or adverbs o Sometimes in “embedded clauses” Example: Candidates who can vastly outspend all rivals haveunfair an advantage in publicizing their platforms.    Subject: Candidates o What about candidates? Predicate: They have an advantage o They have something. Details: unfair – it modifies advantage. o Unfair advantage in what?  Publicizing their platforms. o Who can vastly outspend all rivals?  Subset of candidates  Embedded clause, giving more details. Referential Phrases:     Used mostly in Reading Comprehension Identifying these will help you not get lost. They are words that stand in for something else. Common Referential Phrases are: o It’s o That o This o o o o o Their So They Them Those Referential Phrase Examples: 1. Tom went to the store, and he bought milk.  Who’s he? – Tom  “he” = Tom 2. Most authoritarian rulers who undertake democratic reforms, do so not out of any intrinsic commitment or conversion to democratic ideals, but rather because they for see or recognize that certain changes and mobilizations in civil society make it impossible themfor to hold on indefinitely to absolute power.  So = pointing to democratic reforms.  If you take it out it does not make sense  They = referring to? A subset of rulers, the authoritarian rules  Them = referring to they  Meaning of this paragraph is = autocrats are seeing it impossible for them to have power. 3. Critics have noted that African American folk tradition in its earliest manifestations does not sharply differentiate reality into sacred and secular strains or into irreconcilable dichotomies between good and evil, misery and joy. This is consistent with the apparently dual aspects of the blues and spirituals.  It’s = referring to African American fold tradition  This = the whole sentence before it.
