Classification and 6 Kingdoms Standard: Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to investigate the diversity of living organisms and how they can be compared scientifically. Develop and defend a model that categorizes organisms based on common characteristics. b. Evaluate historical models of how organisms were classified based on physical characteristics and how that led to the six kingdom system (currently archaea, bacteria, protists, fungi, plants, and animals). Let’s talk about classification. What does it mean to classify something? For example: We’ve been classifying the “stuff” in ecosystems as either biotic or abiotic. But why? Classification is one way we can know when two or more things are the same or similar, and when something is not the same or similar. When classifying something, that thing can often fall into more than one category. Also, things that are similar in one way can be in the same category, but can be in separate categories based on how they are different. Another important thing to remember as we go forward is that the categories are made by humans. We arrange things in ways we find useful, and we can change our categories if there is a better way to think about a group of things. The requirements for a category are called criteria.
