Song of Solomon In Tommy Nelson’s sermon over the art of intimacy, I learned a lot about what the Bible says about sex and intimacy. One very important topic that I learned a lot more about as well is how a husband should treat his wife in the way that God wants him to. In Song of Solomon, one consistent theme that I keep noticing is how God calls the man to be gentle, tender, and kind to his wife. Throughout the book of Song of Solomon, the man is always speaking kind and loving words to the woman and complimenting her. He is always lifting her up, not beating her down or criticizing her. One thing that Nelson said in his sermon that really caught my attention when he was talking about preciousness was when he said, “You can’t be a good lover unless you take care of her and love her and treat her well.” When he said this, he also referenced back to when he discussed the godly and holy qualities of a person. To me, this helped me understand that those holy and spiritual qualities we discussed a few weeks ago, such as kindness, gentleness, and more, play a big role in intimacy. Another thing that Nelson said that I believe we often look past is that sex is a loving, tender thing. He even joked that “if there’s no intimacy, then you’re just two slugs on a leaf.” Therefore, I believe that Nelson is saying that God calls partners to treat each other with tenderness, kindness, and gentleness because not only is it what He wants, but it’s also very important in other parts of the relationship, such as in sex and intimacy. He created sex as a place of passion where we can show our deep feelings of love. I really enjoyed hearing Nelson discuss the art of intimacy because I feel like it’s a topic that people don’t want to talk about because they perceive it as private and even “dirty.” So, learning more about what God wants intimacy and sex to be like was very insightful and helpful!
