SYSTEMIC PATHOLOGY
EXAM 1
INTRODUCTION
Pathology
- study of the causes & effects of disease or injury
- systemic pathology study of disorders that affect a system
a disease hardly ever affects only one tissue or organ
Recognition and Interpretation
- recognize structure & appearance of normal tissues 4 organs
"normal" can vary w/in species & breed
-recognize patterns in tissues that represent a lesion
distribution, quantity, color, shape, size, firmness, surface texture
PHultary tumor
some changes are truly microscopic
focus on visibly dramatic changes
Pattern Recognition
1. systematically inspect each component of the organ or tissue
2. observe 7 analyze the components
3. establish the lesion pattern
4. make a diagnosis
lesion: observed change that is different from normal or control
change in size, shape, distr ibution
abnormal texture &
color in the lungs
Il year old spayed female
pale nodule
abnormally large
Boxer dog w/ cough & dysphagia
thyroid gland
nodular
asymmetrical
multifocal random distribution of
discrete solid nodules
Morphologic Diagnosis: Thyroid Follicular carcinoma w/ Pulmonary Metastases
Lesion Overlap
-these become differential diagnoses when similar
Making a Morphologic Diagnosis clear & concise naming of a pattern of structural changes
-categorize the lesion:
degeneration or necrosis
inflammation
vascular disturbance
disturbance of growth
