Proponents argue its inherent fairness and deterrent effect, asserting that it ensures proportional justice. However, a critical examination reveals profound flaws in this approach. By delving into its ethical implications, practical shortcomings, and societal consequences, it becomes evident that "an eye for an eye" is an inadequate basis for determining punishment. At its core, "an eye for an eye" embodies the concept of retributive justice, seeking to balance the scales by inflicting equivalent harm upon the perpetrator. Yet, this principle neglects fundamental ethical principles, such as compassion and rehabilitation. Rather than fostering societal harmony, it perpetuates a cycle of vengeance, devoid of empathy for the offender's circumstances or potential for redemption. Moreover, it fails to acknowledge the inherent fallibility of human judgment, risking the punishment of the innocent and the exacerbation of social injustices.
