Globalizing Your Education
Global
Citizenship
Hoping to engage
an increasingly
interconnected
world, Georgia
Southern seeks
to help students
to become global
citizens. The idea
of global
citizenship might
seem
counterintuitive
The Earth
as modern
citizenship is
often defined by membership in a nation-state. As Madeline F. Green notes in her
essay "Global Citizenship: What Are We Talking About and Why Does it Matter?"
global citizenship is a voluntary commitment to participation in multiple crosscutting communities that expand the horizon of ethical obligation.
Green identifies several features of global citizenship:
A choice and a way of thinking
Self-awareness and awareness of others
Practices of cultural empathy
Cultivation of principled decision-making
Participation in the social and political life of one's community
Global education reflects on the nexus of relationships that situate local social,
cultural, economic, and political contexts within the world. At Georgia Southern,
global thinking is promoted across the curriculum. It is given particular attention in
Area B of the Core Curriculum as well as in study abroad programs.
Global Core
One way that Georgia Southern attempts to globalize education is through Area B
of the Core Curriculum. The student learning outcome for this area is: "Students will recognize and articulate global perspectives across diverse societies in
historical and cultural contexts."
To meet this student learning outcome, Georgia Southern students take 7 credits
from the following list of courses:

Study Abroad
One of the most powerful ways to globalize your education is to study abroad. Of
course, the covid pandemic has limited foreign travel and study abroad programs were cancelled last summer. Several programs do hope to go forward in 2021,
however, and all hope to be running normally by 2022.
The Office of Global Engagement at Georgia Southern has a Global Portal that
offers a detailed overview of programs around the world. One of the highlights of
the portal is that it provides an overview of potential scholarships and financial aid
available for study abroad.
Georgia Southern Campus in Wexford, Ireland
Georgia Southern in Ireland
One exciting new development for Georgia Southern has been the
creation of a new learning centre in Wexford, Ireland. This initiative is
the first of its kind in Ireland.
A key reason for Georgia Southern University’s selection of Wexford as
the site for its first overseas campus is the historic trade-andemigration relationship between the county of Wexford and the city of
Savannah. The strong tie between Savannah and Ireland continues to
play a role in the city's famous St. Patrick's Day parade.
The university has been working to develop programs tailored to
students in each of Georgia Southern's eight colleges. As much of the
Irish Studies program at Georgia Southern is focused on the history,
literature, religion, philosophy, and culture of Ireland, there will be an
especially strong tie to the College of Arts and Humanities. Task List
Please complete the following tasks in this module:
1. Read Madeline F. Green, "Global Citizenship: What Are We Talking About and
Why Does it Matter?"
