Coping Mechanisms Coping mechanisms are every effort that is expected in managing stress, including efforts to solve problems directly and defense mechanisms that are used to protect oneself. Some coping mechanisms that angry clients use to protect themselves include: a. Sublimation: accepting a noble substitute goal. This means that the public is asking for an encouragement that is experiencing normal resistance to its delivery. For example, someone who is angry takes out their anger on other objects such as kneading cake dough, punching a wall and so on, the aim is to reduce the tension caused by anger. b. Projection: blaming other people for their difficulties or bad desires, for example a young woman who denies that she has sexual feelings for her co-worker, then accuses her friend of trying to seduce or fondle her. c. Repression: preventing painful or harmful thoughts from entering consciousness. For example, a child who really hates his parents who he doesn't like. However, according to the teachings or upbringing he received from childhood, hating parents is a bad thing and is cursed by God. So he suppressed the feeling of hatred and finally he was able to forget it. d. Reaction Formation: prevents desires that are dangerous when expressed. By exaggerating opposing attitudes and behaviors and using them as an obstacle. For example, someone who is attracted to her husband's friend will treat that person strongly. e. Deplacement:releasing repressed feelings is usually hostile. On an object that is not as dangerous as the one that originally aroused the emotion. For example: 4 year old Timmy is angry because he has just received punishment from his mother for drawing on his bedroom wall. He started playing war with his friends.
