Motivation      Is the direction and intensity of one’s effort. Direction tells you what you are seeking/ going for. Intensity refers on how much effort you put to reach that destination. “Go getter” motivation is internal. Motivation external is I need something external like a speech to get them motivated. Trait-centered   Motivation is a part of your personality. “Real winner” “go getter.” Situation-centered  The environment and situation they are in motivates them. Interactional  See the qualities of an individual with the circumstance they are in 1. Personal factors: personality, needs, interests and goals. 2. Situational factors: leadership-coach style, facility attractiveness, team win-loss record 3. Participant-by-situation interaction leads to understanding motivation. Achievement motivation  A person’s effort to master a task, achieve excellence, overcome obstacles, perform better than others and take pride in exercising talent. Competitiveness   A disposition to strive for satisfaction when making comparisons with some standard of excellence in the presence of evaluative others. Achievement motivation Setting still matters. Some situations you are competitiveness and some you aren’t. Understanding motivations 1. Consider situation and traits. 2. Multiple motives for involvement 3. Alter the environment (enhance motivation). For example, playing music when working out 4. Influence motivation 5. Behavior modification to affect motives. Intrinsic motivation- internal factor, meaning to the individual, desire Extrinsic motivation- External motivation like wages, bonuses, promotion Theories of achievement motivation 1. Need achievement.  Interactional view that considers both personal and situational factors as predictors of behavior.  People that are high in achievement like challenging tasks, they prefer intermediate or moderate risk, and they perform better when being evaluated.  People that are not driven as hard in achievement these people avoid challenging tasks, avoid moderate risk and perform worse when being evaluated. 2. Self-efficacy  Your believes about your abilities, am I able to perform in a way that’s necessary 3. Achievement goal theory  A person’s motivation will be determined by interaction of 3 factors: your achievement goals, their perceived ability (do you think you can do this) and their achievement behavior (what are they going to do to try and succeed)  Are you focused on the outcome (winning) or the task (performance)? 4. Competence motivation theory  People are motivated to feel worthy, or competence and these feelings determine motivation.
