Stereotypes, prejudice and discrimination Stereotypes- a cognitive description or category of a group of people. A belief. Prejudice- When you have a stereotype and attach an attitude to it. Can be good or bad prejudice. Believe with a thought. Discrimination- when you have a stereotype and prejudice and then you act on it. Taking action Common stereotypes Gender  People aren’t clear about their gender and have a category in their head. Race  Israel and Palestine war Sexual orientation Consequences of stereotypes on athletes Negative self-evaluations  Internalize the critique of me but that critique of me isn’t based on performance but based on comparing a stereotype. Self-fulfilling prophecies    Create your own prediction. When people start saying how you do match or don’t match with a stereotype Relating someone to a stereotype and then saying I knew it Stereotype threat   If you know someone has a stereotype about you it affects your performance Occurs when I’m aware there is a stereotype about me and affects my performance Reducing prejudice and discrimination 1. Contact hypothesis  Reduce tensions between groups by bringing them together. 3. Superordinate goals  Shared goal that both groups want. 4.
