Eye Irrigation Action I. Theoretical Concepts An action to clean the eyes. Eye irrigation is given to remove secretions or dirt and foreign objects and chemicals from the eyes. Physiological saline solution or RL is usually used because it is an isotonic solution that does not change the electrolyte composition needed by the eye. If you only need a small amount of fluid, sterile cotton can be used to drip the fluid into the eye. II. Objective To clean and remove foreign objects from the eye. III. Indication 1. Chemical injury to the eye 2. Foreign objects in the eye 3. Eye inflammation IV. Contraindications Wounds due to punctures in the eye can cause erosion of the eye area. V. Complications a. There is a possibility of perforation injury to the eye if irrigation is done carelessly b. Cross contamination of the healthy eye if there is an infection c. Conjunctiva VI. Procedure 1. Preparation of tools a. Topical (local) anesthesia, sterile irrigation fluid is usually used physiological salt solution (NaCl) b. The desmares retractor is a device that attaches the eye to the eyelid c. Plaster d. Bent e. Towels/clothes to cover the patient's clothes. 2. Action Procedure a. Explain the action procedure b. Washing hands c. Cover the patient with a towel/cloth d. Local anesthesia e. Use a Desmares retractor to open the upper eyelid. If there is no device, the eyelid must be held in place with gauze. f. To keep the eyelids open, apply pressure on the prominent bones of the eyebrows and cheeks, not on the eyeballs g. Aim the irrigation directly at the round part and the top and bottom of the vornikes (from the inner canthus to the outer canthus). h. Usually 1 liter of liquid water is used quickly for injuries due to smoke. Usually 2 liters of liquid are used for acid alkaline injuries. i. Dry the outside of the tear and the surrounding area after irrigating.
