Tides vocabulary
Tide - Daily rise + fall of sea level
- moon's gravitational force
causes water to bulge
- As moon moves, bulge moves
Two types of tides
Tide | Effect on high and low tides | Moon phases | Sun, Earth, Moon positioning | Image
|---|---|---|---|---|
Spring | - Sun + moon gravity combines - Higher high tides + lower low tides | New Moon + Full moon | aligned | [Diagram of Spring Tides]
Neap | - Lower high tides + higher low tides | First + Third quarters | Sun, Earth, Moon at right angles (perpendicular) | [Diagram of Neap Tides]
