Q. Give an account of conjugation in Paramecium and its significance. Conjugation is the temporary fusion of two individuals called conjugants at the oral region. This type of reproduction is a characteristic of holotrich ciliates. Steps of the representation of conjugation process in Paramecium: A and B unite to form conjugants. The macronucleus disintegrates. The macronucleus undergoes successive divisions, forming 8 pronuclei from each conjugant. One pronucleus of each conjugant is exchanged. Fusion of exchanged pronuclei leads to the formation of the zygote nucleus. Three successive divisions produce 8 nuclei. Four nuclei form macronuclei, while the others disintegrate. The micronucleus divides into two, forming daughter Paramecia. Significance of Conjugation in Paramecium: Rejuvenation: If binary fission continues for many generations, Paramecium will reduce in size and eventually die off. Conjugation can revive this lost vigor for sexual reproduction. Nuclear Reorganization: During conjugation, there is a readjustment between the nucleus and cytoplasm. New macronucleus is formed, enhancing vigour and vitality in metabolic functions. Hereditary Variation: Conjugation blends genetic lines and introduces new traits. These traits enable better adaptation to the environment.
