4/4 OSCE 4PY019.docx Emergency Supply at the Request of a Patient: Gathering Information: · Introduce self. · Confirms patient identity. · Ask the patient whether they would like to talk in the consultation room. · Confirm if they have any allergies. · Establishes that the patient does not take any other regular prescribed medication. · Establishes that the patient does not take any herbal / OTC medication. · Confirm what the medication is for i.e. epilepsy. · Establishes that the patient has an immediate need for the medication. · Establishes that it is not practical for the patient to obtain a prescription without undue delay. · Establishes that the patient has been taking this medication regularly and has been prescribed by a UK doctor (have taken this medication before / not first time) · Confirm the dose the patient has been taking i.e. confirm verbally with the patient + ask for evidence of the dose e.g. repeat prescription seen. · Establishes that the patient is on holiday for 3 days. · Confirms that the patient has a plentiful supply of their medication at home when they return. Options / Management: · Informs the patient that they can provide them with an emergency supply of their medication (4-5 days would be appropriate in this case but up to 30 days would be acceptable) · Informs the patient that they will have to charge them for the medication because they don’t have a prescription. · (make a record in POM register) · Remind the patient how to take the medication when handing out the medication i.e. ‘Take one tablet twice a day’. · Remind the patient that the medicine may make them sleepy.
