Airway Suctioning Descriptions • • • Has a rigid, bent and plastic (Yankeur) catheter, or soft flexible Y suction catheter. It is clear and lets you see the secretions and fluids being sucked out. Has a blub tip with one large and several smaller openings. - Bulb tip prevents trauma to the oral cavity. - The smaller openings provide suctioning, even if the large opening is closed. Indications • • • • To remove secretions, blood or vomitus from a patient’s airway -> these cause insufficient oxygen supply. - Especially for those that are weak to cough or cannot cough in such a way to clear the secretions or whatever is blocking the airways. Can be used to clear nares, nasopharynx, oropharynx, stroma’s or airway adjuncts. For a standby use in preparation for endotracheal intubation. Symtomps that help identify that the patient needs this: - Difficulty swallowing and coughing of secretions. - Visible secretions that obstruct airway/air flow. - Vomitus in mouth - Decreases consciousness. - Noisy breathing sounds. - Orla surgeries - Mouth trauma - Stroke (drooling and/or impaired swallowing). • Can be used ot provide oral hygiene and prevention infection in those that have impaired swallowing or have an artificial airway. Equipment • • • • • • • • Gloves Facemask or googles. Bath towels Cloth or disposable paper drape Disposable cup or wash basin. Tab water or normal saline Suction device - Connecting tubing.
