Anatomy of the female reproductive system Internal organs • Ovaries -> female gonads - • Fallopian tube/uterine tubes - • Epithelial, follicular and granulosa, theca and oocyte cells. Make estrogen and progesterone. Held in place by the ovarian, board, suspensory ligaments. ✓ Suspensory ligaments contain ovarian artery, vein, and nerve plexus. Made of outer cortex, inner medulla. ✓ Cortex -> ovarian follicles -> oocytes surrounded by granulosa cells. Flattened mesothelial, epithelial, secretory, intercalary cells. Ampulla -> where fertilisation takes place. Covered by peritoneum, supported by mesosalpinx. Lined with smooth muscle, cilia to sweep zygote towards uterus, inner mucosa -> provides nutrients for oocyte. Uterus - - Located posterior to bladder, anterior to rectum. Fundus (top) -> uterine body -> uterine isthmus -> cervix (neck of uterus). ✓ Cervical opening to vagina -> external os -> thins dilates during childbirth. ✓ Cervical opening into the urine cavity -> internal os. Anchored to sacrum (uterosacral ligaments) -> anterior body wall (round ligaments). • • Supported by cardinal ligaments, mesomterium. Three layers of uterine wall: - • Perimetrium, myometrium (smooth muscle), endometrium (highly vascular mucosal layer). Vagina - Extends form uterus, opens into vulva (covered by the hymen in childhood). Outer muscular wall containing rugae -> inner mucous membrane of stratified squamous epithelium. Fornix (superior, domed area) connected to sides of cervix. External Organs • • The genitals Mons pubis, clitoris, vagina, labia minor, labia majora.
