Binge-eating disorder Definition Epidemiology • More common in females • Peak in adults Aetiology • • • • Psychological issues Family history History of dieting Often associated with hyperlipidaemia, metabolic syndrome, T2DM and cardiovascular diseases Features/signs and symptoms • Eating faster than normal • Eating until uncomfortably full • Eating in excess amounts even when not hungry • Eating alone because embarrassed of owns’ eating habits • Feeling disgust or guilt after eating • Obesity when young • No weight loss measures Diagnosis • • • History Psychological examinations Blood tests - Increased glucose levels - Increased cholesterol • Increased blood pressure and/or heart problems Treatment and Management • Psychotherapy - Cognitive behavioural therapy -> for things that trigger binge eating - Interpersonal therapy -> for relationships with others - Dialectical behavioural therapy -> for developing skills to help tolerate stress, emotion regulation and reduce desire to eat • Pharmacotherapy - Anti-depressants: if condition is due to depression - Topiramate: reduces binge eating episodes - Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor: reduce binge eating impulses Complications • • • Increased risk of psychological comorbidities - Depression - Anxiety Obesity Heart issues • • • T2DM Social isolation Substance use disorders
