BLOOD SUPPLY OF THE ABDOMEN Artery Compartment Origin Course Distribution Superfi cial and deep abdominal wall of hypochondriac region; anterolateral diaphragm Rectus abdominis muscle; superficial and deep abdominal wall of epigastric and upper umbilical regions Superficial and deep abdominal wall of lateral (lumbar or flank) region Musculophrenic Deep lateral Internal thoracic artery Descends along costal margin Superior epigastric Deep medial Internal thoracic artery Descends in rectus sheath deep to rectus abdominis 10th and 11th posterior intercostal arteries Subcostal artery Deep lateral Aorta Arteries continue beyond ribs to descend in abdominal wall between internal oblique and transversus abdominis muscles Aorta Inferior epigastric Deep medial External iliac artery Arteries continue beyond ribs to descend in abdominal wall between internal oblique and transversus abdominis muscles Runs superiorly and enters rectus sheath; runs deep to rectus abdominis Deep cicumflex Deep External iliac artery Runs on deep aspect of anterior abdominal wall, parallel to inguinal ligament Supericial circumflex artery Superficial epigastric artery Fermoal Superfical lateral Femoral artery Runs in subcutaneous tissue along inguinal ligament Superfical medial Femoral artery Runs in subcutaneous tissue toward umbilicus Continuation of external iliac artery distal to inguinal ligament escends through femoral triangle bisecting it; then courses through adductor canal; terminates as it traverses adductor hiatus, where its name becomes popliteal artery Superficial and deep abdominal wall of lateral (lumbar or flank) region Rectus abdominis muscle; deep abdominal wall of pubic and inferior umbilical regions Iliacus muscle and deep abdominal wall of inguinal region; iliac fossa Superficial abdominal wall of inguinal region and adjacent anterior thigh Superficial abdominal wall of pubic and inferior umbilic regions Branches supply anterior and anteromedial aspects of thigh
