MUSCLES OF THE SHOULDER Muscles of the shoulder girdle and glenohumeral joint Anterior thorax muscles Muscle Pectoralis major (Both heads) Pectoralis minor Origin Insertion Clavicular head – medial Intertubular groove half of clavicle Sternocostal head – ant. Surface of sternum, rib 1-6 costal cartilages Surface of ribs 1-9 Medial border of scapula (ant. Surface) Serratus Ribs 3-5 anterior Subclavius 1 st rib Innervation Lat. + med. Pectoral nerves Function Adduction + medial rotation (heads can function independently) Long thoracic Protraction + rotation nerve (C5-7) of scapula (Boxer/s muscle), accessory resp. muscle Coracoid process Medial pectoral Depress scapula nerve (C8, T1) Inferior surface of clavicle Subclavian Depress + stabilise nerve (C5,6) clavicle Scapulohumeral muscles Muscles from the scapula to the humerus including the rotator cuff muscles, Teres major and Deltoids. Muscle Supraspinatus Infraspinatus Teres minor Subscapularis Teres major Origin Insertion Medial 2/3 of Superior facet on supraspinous fossa greater tubercle (humerus) Medial 2/3 of Mid. Facet on infraspinous fossa greater tubercle (humerus) Upper 2/3 of post. Inf. facet on greater And lat. Aspect of tubercle (humerus) infraspinous fossa Subscapular fossa Lesser tubercle of humerus Dorsal surface of Medial lip scapula (towards inf. intertubercular angle) groove Innervation Suprascapular nerve (C5,6) Function Initiate abduction stabilise Suprascapular nerve (C5,6) Lat. Rotation + stabilise Axillary (C5,6) + nerve Lat. Rotation + stabilise Upper + lower subscapular nerves (C5,6) of Lower subscapular nerve (C5,6) Medial rotation, adduction + stabilise Adduction rotation and medial Deltoids
