Surface Anatomy of the Heart Position of the Heart • In middle part of the thoracic region - • “mediastinum” Held in place within the mediastinum by: - Sternopericardial ligaments ✓ Attached anteriorly to the posterior part of the sternum ✓ Upper ligament: associated with manubrium ✓ Lower ligament: associated with xiphoid process Pericardium • Fibrous layer - Outer layer • Serous pericardium - - • Tough Partial layer ✓ Outer layer Visceral layer ✓ Inner layer ✓ Forms epicardium ✓ Outer most layer of the heart These layers are separated by pericardial cavity ✓ Fluid filled space ✓ Allows the layers to slide past on another during heart contraction Relationship of pericardium to diaphragm - Base lays over the diaphragm Attaches to the central tendon by the pericardiophrenic ligaments
