Sigmoidoscopy Uses: It is used to diagnose: • • • • • • Polyps Colon cancer Rectal cancers Inflammation/swelling Bleeding Haemorrhoids • Rigid sigmoidoscopy: - 25cm long - It allows for the examination of up to 15-20 cm of the rectum and the colon. - Causes discomfort. - Time consuming. - A restricted view of the rectum and the colon is seen in this one. Flexible sigmoidoscopy: - it is made of a flexible fibre-optic tube. - Can be up to 60 cm long. - Allows for examination of the descending colon. - Ease of obtaining tissue biopsies. - Better tolerance. Types • Rigid sigmoidoscopy • • It is performed in the following situations: - Symptoms suggestive of the colon or rectal cancer - Because any surgery of the anus or the colon. - For performing aby biopsy of any bowel disease, which are within reach of the instrument. - Assessing the length of rectal cancer. - As a control treatment in case of abdominal twisting got the bowel -> sigmoid volvulus. It should be avoided when: - The patient has a suspected or a known perforation of the small intestines. - Patients with anal stenosis. Flexible sigmoidoscopy • Usually performed with bowel preparation id after a phosphate enema. • Reaches past the sigmoid and the descending colon to the splenic flexures -> covers 75% of the areas at risk.
