Important anatomy • • • • • Internal anal sphincter -> involuntary muscles - Relaxes when the bowel proximal to it contracts of distends. - Has a role in maintain sphincter baseline to prevent involuntary leakage. External anal sphincter-> voluntary - Voluntarily controlled. - Contracts during resting state to maintain continence. - Releases during defecation too allow stool passage. Levator ani -> muscular pelvic diaphragm -> muscle tendinous sheath -> forms majority of pelvic floor. - Supports pelvic visceral. - Aids in urinary and faecal movement and continence Rectum is lined by peritoneum, which lines the peritoneal cavity and covers the abdominal organs. Pectinate line/dentate line: important as it is visible and approximates the level of certain anatomical changes: - Above the pectinate line is where there are cells that originate from the endoderm (part of the abdominal organs) and below has an ectoderm (it is the skin). ✓ Hence below the pectinate line it is a very sensitive area -> very painful and localised.
