Structure and Function of Red Blood Cells • Lacks nucleus, mitochondria, and endoplasmic reticulum - Benefits: Allows for more space for oxygen to be carried Negatives: The lack of nucleus means that: ➢ Inability to undergo cell division (mitosis) ➢ Inability to perform self-repair ➢ Unable to make proteins ➢ Short life span of 120 days ➢ The lack of mitochondria means that the RBCs have to reply on glycolysis for energy production, which is less effective, as the kerb’s cycle and oxidative phosphorylation are much more effective at making energy. • Biconcave disc shape - Benefits: ➢ Maximises surface area to volume ratio, that allowing more space for oxygen carrying ➢ Allows for gas exchange • Have sceptrin and ankyrin - Benefits: ankyrin attaches sceptrin to the cell membrane of RBC. These two proteins give RBCs flexibility allowing them to stretch and squeeze in order to be able to go through different capillaries • Have Haemoglobin (Hb) - Benefits: allows for oxygen carrying. Each carries up to 4 O2 molecules Negatives: N/A Structure: ➢ An adult haemoglobin is known as HbA. It consists of: ✓ 2 alpha globin chains ✓ 2 beta globin chains ✓ One each chain there is a heme group ✓ One each heme there is an iron molecule, which anchors the binding of oxygen to Hb
