Classifying bones based on shape Long bones ● Longer than they are wide (even if they’re small, like the fingers) ● Bones of the upper and lower limbs (except girdles, wrists and ankles) Short bones ● Cuboidal shape ● Carpals (wrist) and tarsals (ankles) Flat bones ● Flat and has concavity ● Not all cranial bones are flat bones (just the ones that make up the braincase → interlock to protect the nervous system) ● Skull, clavicle, scapula, ribs, *pelvic bones* Irregular ● Doesn’t fit anywhere else ● Vertebrae, facial bones, *pelvic bones* ● *Pelvic bones* ○ Can be irregular or flat bone because of the shape of the ilium ○ Flat bones also offer bony protection for body cavities Sesamoid ● Starts the size of a sesame seed ● Develops within a tendon and increases in size (depending on the load applied to the bone as the individual develops) ● Increase ROM of tendon ● Patella (tendon where quadriceps muscle attaches on the anterior portion of the knee joint), where the big toe connects to the foot
