Spinal nerves ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● Nerves that come straight off the spine Have both afferents and efferent Dorsal route with afferent (cell body located in the dorsal root ganglion) Ventral root with efferent (cell body located in the spinal cord) Spinal nerve = sensory and motor fibres together (at the point where they leave the vertebrae) Somatic (voluntary) and ANS (involuntary) grouped together Somatic = communicates with muscles and skin ANS = communicates with organs Reflex arc 1 in 1 out ● Stimulus in and it gives out an effect ● Interneuron is inhibitory (doesn’t let the antagonist from working - wants the agonist to work) ● Doesn’t require communication with the brain = just in the spinal cord Knee jerk reflex ● Occurs in the spinal cord (doesn’t go to the brain) ● Receptors detect that the quads have been stretched ● Sensory neurons bring in the info ● Triggers motor neurons in the quads to contract ● Monosynaptic because the sensory and motor neurons communicate directly without anything in between Monosynaptic reflex ● Connection to extensor muscle (2 neurons only) ● Hitting the patella ligament stretches the muscle ● ● ● Sensory neuron has the info to say that a stretch occurred Relays it back to the motor neuron which says bring it back to where it was (contracts the muscle back) Tells the muscle to contract to go back to its original stretch Disynaptic reflex → check this with your physiology notes ● Connection to flexor muscle (> 2 neurons) ● Slightly slower ● The dots show the interneuron (inhibitory) which tells the hamstring not to contract ● Inhibits the shortening of the antagonist to prevent another reflex from occurring (don’t want an endless cycle)
