Types of alcoholic drinks • • • Spirts - Enter blood stream the quickest out of three - Highest peak in blood alcohol content - 40% alcohol Beer - Slowest to enter blood stream - regular can of beer contains more minerals such as folate, phosphorous, niacin, vitamin B, and selenium than a glass of wine does - source of silicon strengthens bones and slows down the effect of osteoporosis - high ethanol level; averaging 4% to 6% alcohol content - fermentation is required to make beer Wine - Less calories - Alcohol concentration ranges from 9% to 16% - Higher amounts of polyphenols - High acidity ✓ Long term consumption can weaken the teeth’s enamel - Faster absorption than beer ✓ Cause dehydration and dependency faster than beer Standard drink and Australian drinking guidelines • • In Australia, a standard drink is any drink containing 10 grams of alcohol, regardless of container size or alcohol type To reduce risks for alcohol Healthy men and women should take no more than 10 standard drinks of alcohol per week - No more than four standard drinks of on any one day Should not be consumed by anyone under 18 Pregnant and breast-feeding women -> no alcohol as it harms the baby Following the Guidelines keeps the risk of harm from alcohol low, but it does not remove all risk. - • • •
