Dr. Lively‬ ‭ENGL 1102 B‬ ‭Fall 2022‬ ‭Evaluating the Efficacy of Cancelling Extracurricular Activities as a Disciplinary‬ ‭Measure‬ ‭In response to the persistent litter issue plaguing our school's campus despite previous‬ ‭directives for better upkeep, the principal's decision to suspend all extracurricular activities‬ ‭emerges as a punitive measure aimed at rectifying the situation. While this approach may appear‬ ‭stringent, it is imperative to scrutinize its efficacy in addressing the root causes of the problem‬ ‭and its potential ramifications on student engagement and behavior. Through a comprehensive‬ ‭evaluation of the underlying factors contributing to campus litter and the impact of‬ ‭extracurricular activities on student behavior, this essay contends that while the principal's‬ ‭reaction underscores the gravity of the situation, alternative strategies focusing on education and‬ ‭community involvement may yield more sustainable solutions.‬ ‭Primarily, the decision to curtail extracurricular activities as a response to the litter‬ ‭predicament fails to address the multifaceted nature of the issue. While extracurricular activities‬ ‭offer students avenues for personal growth and social development, their cancellation deprives‬ ‭students of crucial opportunities for constructive engagement. Rather than addressing the‬ ‭underlying causes of littering behavior, such as a lack of awareness or responsibility, this‬ ‭punitive measure risks fostering resentment and disengagement among students. Moreover, it‬ ‭overlooks the potential of extracurricular activities as platforms for instilling values of‬ ‭environmental stewardship and community responsibility. Instead of resorting to punitive‬ ‭measures, the school administration should explore proactive interventions such as educational‬ ‭campaigns, incentivized clean-up initiatives, and student-led conservation projects to cultivate a‬ ‭culture of environmental consciousness and collective responsibility. By involving students in‬ ‭the process of problem-solving and fostering a sense of ownership over their campus‬ ‭environment, the school can effect meaningful and lasting change while preserving the integrity‬ ‭of its extracurricular programs.
