Protection: - The skin is the body's first line of defense against physical, chemical, and microbial threats from the external environment. The epidermis, the outermost layer of the skin, forms a waterproof barrier that prevents excessive water loss and shields against harmful microorganisms. 2. Physical Barrier: - The epidermis consists of layers of tightly packed cells that prevent the entry of harmful substances, such as bacteria and viruses. - The skin's physical barrier also reduces the risk of injury by absorbing and distributing mechanical forces. 3. Immune Response: - The skin houses specialized immune cells, such as Langerhans cells, that help identify and neutralize potential threats. When the skin is damaged, immune cells are activated to initiate an immune response against invaders. 4. Sensation: - The skin contains sensory receptors that allow us to perceive sensations like touch, pressure, temperature, and pain. These sensations provide valuable feedback about the environment and potential dangers. 5.
