‭TREATMENT OF BIPOLAR DISORDER‬ ‭The‬‭choice‬‭of‬‭means‬‭and‬‭therapeutic‬‭modalities‬‭is‬‭made‬‭according‬‭to‬‭the‬‭age‬‭of‬‭the‬‭patient,‬‭his‬‭history,‬ ‭the‬ ‭nature‬ ‭of‬ ‭the‬ ‭symptomatology,‬ ‭the‬ ‭degree‬ ‭of‬ ‭urgency,‬ ‭the‬ ‭nature‬ ‭of‬ ‭the‬ ‭disorder‬ ‭and‬ ‭the‬ ‭predominant polarity (manic or depressive). ) of the disorder.‬ ‭Therapeutic means Thermoregulators‬ ‭These‬‭are‬‭psychotropic‬‭drugs‬‭that‬‭reduce‬‭the‬‭frequency,‬‭duration,‬‭and‬‭intensity‬‭of‬‭mood‬‭episodes,‬‭and‬ ‭improve‬ ‭the‬ ‭quality‬ ‭of‬ ‭free‬ ‭intervals.‬ ‭They‬ ‭constitute‬ ‭the‬ ‭cornerstone‬ ‭of‬ ‭the‬ ‭treatment‬ ‭of‬ ‭bipolar‬ ‭disorders.‬ ‭There are different types:‬ ‭✪Lithium salts:‬‭(Téralith*): leader in mood regulators‬ ‭✪Anticonvulsants‬‭:‬ ‭Valproate (Dépakine*) and Valropmide (Depamide*)‬ ‭Lamotrigine: (Lamictal*)‬ ‭Carbamazepine (tegretol*)‬ ‭✪Antipsychotics‬‭:‬ ‭Recently,‬‭it‬‭has‬‭been‬‭demonstrated‬‭that‬‭certain‬‭second-generation‬‭antipsychotics‬‭have‬‭mood-regulating‬ ‭properties‬ ‭such‬ ‭as‬ ‭quetiapine‬ ‭(Seroquel*),‬ ‭olanzapine‬ ‭(Zyprexa*,‬ ‭Vaincor*),‬ ‭aripiptazole‬ ‭(Abilify*)‬ ‭and risperidone (Risperdal*).‬ ‭Anxiolytics‬‭:‬ ‭They are used for sedative purposes. Clonazepam (Rivotril) has even shown antimanic action as well‬ ‭as Lorazepam (Temesta)*.‬ ‭Antipsychotics‬‭:‬ ‭Apart from certain antipsychotics which have a thymoregulatory action.They have the advantage of‬ ‭having a rapid response time. Antidepressants:‬ ‭They‬ ‭must‬ ‭be‬ ‭handled‬ ‭with‬ ‭great‬ ‭care‬ ‭due‬ ‭to‬ ‭the‬ ‭increased‬ ‭risk‬ ‭of‬ ‭a‬ ‭maniacal‬ ‭turn.‬ ‭They‬ ‭are‬ ‭recommended in severe bipolar depression with coverage by a mood stabilizer.‬ ‭Electroconvulsive therapy‬‭:‬ ‭Prescribed‬ ‭either‬ ‭as‬ ‭second-line‬ ‭treatment,‬ ‭after‬ ‭failure‬ ‭of‬ ‭mood-regulating‬ ‭treatment,‬ ‭or‬‭as‬‭first-line‬ ‭treatment in the event of:‬ ‭-‬‭Agitated and furious mania‬ ‭-‬‭Delusional mania and depression‬ ‭-‬‭Confused mania‬
