The Behaviora l Approach The behavioral approach stater that we are the products of learning and associations. We ate the end result ot all the dufferent events we have been exposed to through out life, the types of responses we have made to them, and the consequen- ces of making those responses. Whether or not you get in vowed in delinquent benovior, for instance, depends on the types of punishments or rewards that have been part of your life up to rewards for not doing forbidden things have been great enough, this will succesfully counteract the desire to do forbidden, such as vandalizing someone's property. But if you have gotten attention over the years mostly for doing things that are not allowed, then the rewards for doing them can be greater than the rewards for not doing them. John B. Watson was an early behavioust, but one of the most tamous recent benaviorists is B. F. Skinner (1904 - 1990). Skinner distited philosophy and focused only on what could be seen. He believed we are controlled by the environmens In the sense that we become whatever the enronment forces us to be - good or bad (Skinner, 1961). Shortly beture his death. Skinner wrote a paper about his concerns over the disection psychology was taking. Psychology. in his view, was moving away from the study of observable behavior. He felts that the empresis on things we cannot see or study directly, such as cognition, and unconscious processes, threatens to make psychology less suentiAr (Skinner, 1990).
