Bromass Energy When a log is burned we are usng biomass energy. Because plants and trees depend on sunlighr to grow, biomecs energy is a form of stored solar energy. Although wood is the largest source of blomas energy, we also use agri- cultural waste, sugarcane wastes, and other form byprod- ucts to make energy. There are three ways to use bromass. It can be burred to produce neat and electricity, changed to a gos-like fuel such as methane, of changed to a kquid fuel. Uqued fuels, also called blofuels, include two forms of alcohol: ethanol and methanol. Because blomass can bo changed directly into liquid fuel, it could someday supply much of our transportation tuel needs for cars, trucks, buses, airplanes. and trans with diesel fuel replaced by biodiesel made from vegetable olle. In the united states, this fuel is now beling produced from soybean all. Researchers are also developing algae that produce olls, which can be conver. ted to brodies el and new ways have been found to produce etranol prom grasses, trees, bark, saw duct, paper, and farming wastes . Organical municipals solid waste uncludes paper, Good wostes, and other organie non- fossil - fuel derived materials such as textiles, natural rubber, and leather that are found in the waste of urban areas. Currenrly, un the us, approximately 31% of organce woste in recovered from munapal solid waste via recycling and composting programs, 62% 1s deposited in land fulls ond 1%% is incinerated. Woste materials con be converted new electricity by combustion bollers or steam turbines.
