The living world: Biodiversity Genetic Diversity- total number of genetic characteristics in the genetic makeup of a species. Species Diversity- the number of species and abundance of each species that live in a particular location Ecosystem Diversity- variations in ecosystems within a geographical location Specialist species- are animals that require a very unique resource, a specific habitat, a limited diet. Generalist species- is able to thrive in a wide variety of environmental conditions, could easily adapt to a changing environment. Species Richness-The number of different species represented in an ecological community, landscapes or region. To calculate it its D = s √N where s equals the number of different species represented in your sample, and N equals the total number of individual organisms in the sample, we find that the resulting numbers are the same, 0.6, because both samples have the same number of species Relative Abundance- The percentage composition of an organism of an orgamsim of a particular kind relative to the total number of organisms in the area. To calculate it, dividing the number of species from one group by the total number of species from all groups. What do they reveal? SR-how many different species are there RA-show how many species are relative to each other. Ecosystem Services 1. Provisioning-products obtained from ecosystems 2. Regulating- benefits obtained front the regulation of the ecosystem processes 3. Cultural-non-material, spiritual enrichment 4. Supporting-necessary for the production 5 ways that humans have disrupted the ecosystem: 1. Deforestation 2. Global Warming 3. Population 4. Fracking 5. Pollution What is the range of tolerance? How can one determine what it is? Range of tolerance is a range of environmental conditions that are tolerable for survival in a species. To tell , look at all the factors. Zone of Intolerance-the area outside the geographic range where a population is absent Zone of Physiological Stress-members of a population are rare due to physical and biological limiting factors Zone of Optimum-range of physiological arousal Natural Disruptions:fires,floods,severe storms,insects,etc.. Resistance-the ability for an ecosystem to remain unchanged Resilience-the ability and rate for an ecosystem to recover How can plants adapt to fire? Resprout from buds in the plants that are below the ground such as the root crown or the underground stems(rhizomes). They are protected to some degree from the fire damage. Keystone Species- other species in the ecosystem largely depend on Example;sharks, sea otter Indicator Species- an animal or plant species that can be used to infer conditions in a particular habitat. Example; anchor worms, salmon louse Pioneer Community- made of all living organisms that occupy an area undergoing primary succession Climax Community-final stage of succession remaining relatively unchanged until destroyed by an event
