SELF-CONCEPT AND SPORT- UNDERSTANDING THE MECHANISMS Historical Background  Self-concept exploration in psychology traces back to William James in the late 19th century.  The hierarchical structure of self-concept, with specific self-concepts influenced more directly by experiences and evaluations. The "Exercise and Self-Esteem Model" (EXSEM)  Developed by Sonstroem and Morgan (1989) and extended by Sonstroem et al. (1994).  Focuses on the influence of sport-related physical experiences on the physical self-concept.  Bottom-up process: Sport activities contribute experiences, leading to positive self-esteem.  Based on Shavelson et al.'s hierarchical self-concept model and Bandura's selfefficacy theory.  Emphasis on understanding how sport and exercise programs can positively influence self-esteem.  Limited systematic validation studies for EXSEM and the expanded model. to physical self-efficacy Sport-Related Self-Concept Interventions  Hierarchical self-concept structure suggests the need to target dimensions, subdimensions, or facets rather than global dimensions.  Specificity of self-concept interventions is crucial for success.  Interventions tailored to specific facets achieve greater effects.  Empirical studies show that interventions targeting individual dimensions tend to have more significant effects.  Children and adolescents benefit more from physical activity, and those with low self-esteem are more easily positively influenced by sport.  Factors affecting intervention effectiveness include the content of the intervention, the setting in which it occurs, and the change in fitness induced by the intervention. facets or  School-based sport interventions tend to have greater effects on self-concept and general self-esteem than leisure sports.  Pedagogically trained personnel in school settings consider both content and didactic-methodological aspects.
