Earlier you assessed your own communication apprehension in public speaking. A common misconception is that people who experience high degrees at communication apprehehsion are alsoishy. Using Performance Visualization to Reduce Apprehension Performance visualization is a technique designed specifically to reduce the outward manifestations of speaker apprehension and also to reduce negatiVe thinking (Ayres and Hopf l993, 1995). Try reducing your own communication apprehension by following these two simple suggestions. The first part of performance visualization is to develop a positive attitude and a positive self perceptionso, visualize yourself in the role of being an effective speaker. Visualize yourself communicating as a fully and totally confident individual. Look at your listeners and speak. Throughout your conversation see yourself. As fully in control of the situation. See your listeners in rapt attention from the time you begin to the time you stop. Throughout this visualization, avoid all negative thoughts. As you visualize yourself as an eifective ; Speaker, take special note of how you walk, lookat your listeners, respond to questions, and especially how you feel about the whole experience. 2. The second part of performance visualization is designed to help you model your performance on that of an especially effective Speaker. View a particularly competent speaker and make a mental mavie of it. Try selecting one on video so you can replay it several times. As you review the actual and mental movie, begin to shift yourself into the role of speaker. Become this effective speaker. 3.4.
