FUNDAMENTALS OF SPEECHE COMMUNICATION REQUIREMENT-(CMST101) -Lecture Notes (2020) -Chapter : 10-11 -PRACTICALLY SPEAKING : 10.1 Short Speech Tecnique Prepare and deliver a two minut speech in which you : a. explain how men and women see the world differently or similarly. b. explain the importance of culture in public speaking. c. explain a particularly strong belief that you hold. d. explain some of the things you don't understand about the influence of culture, age, gender, or any sociological factor an audience analysis. e. explain the differences among attitudes, beliefs, and values (with lots of examplesll) 10.2 Analyzing an Unknown Audience This experience should familiarize you with some of the essential steps in analyzing an audience on the basis of relatively little evidence and in predicting their attitudes. The class should be broken up into small groups of five or six members. Each group will be given a different magazine ; their task is to analyze the audience, the readers or subscribers of that particular magazine in terms of the characteristics discussed in this unit. The only information the groups will have about their audience is that they're avid and typical readers of the given magazine. Pay particular attention to the types of articles published in the magazine, the advertisements, the photographs or illustrations, the editorial statements, the price of the magazine, and so on. Magazines that differ widely from each other are most appropriate for this experience. After the audience has been analyzed, try to identify at least three favorable and three unfavorable attitudes that they probably hold on contemporary issues. On what basis do you make these predictions ? If you had to address this audience advocating a position with which They disagreed, what adaptations would you make ? What strategies would you use in preparing and presenting this persuasive speech ? Each group should share with the rest of the class the ' results of their efforts, taking special care to point out not only their conclusions but also the evidence and reasoning they used to arrive at the conclusions. Each student should analyze the audience based on the five dimensions identified in this unit, then complete a set of scales (such as that presented in Figure 11.1) for each of the situations. On the basis of this analysis, what one suggestion would you give the speaker to help her or him better adapt the speech to this audience ? a. Film students listening to Quentin Tarantino talk about how to break into films. b. High school athletes listening to a college athletic director speaking against Sports scholar ships. c. Pregnant women listening to an advertising agency executive speak on how advertisers try to protect the consumer. d. Office managers listening to an organizational communication consultant speaking on ways to increase employee morale and productivity. e. Chicago high school seniors listening to a college recruiter speak on the advantages of a small rural colege.
