ANENCEPHALY – PEDS Defect of brain development that results in small or missing brain hemispheres , skull and scalp Occurs when the cephalic or upper end of the neural tube fails to close during the third – fourth week gestation They are born w/out forebrain and cerebrum and the remaining brain tissue is exposed This condition is INCOMPATIBLE with life- these kids usually die *** Assessment Large defect noted in the vault of the skull Mom may have difficult labor due to malformation of the head not allowing it to engage in the cervix Most babies will be born STILLBORN- or die within hrs to days to weeks of birth Baby is usually blind, dead, unconscious, unable to feel pain Reflex actions – RR, reactions to sound/touch and ability to suck may be present Nursing management POOR PROGNOSIS Supportive management and focus on comfort measures Use of an infant cap can behelpful and make parents feel more comfortable w holding and comforting their baby Assist w grieving and decision making to end of life care
