HOW TO TEST CRANIAL NERVE IN KIDS I OLFACTORY Function- sense of smell Assess: cannot be done in super small children Assess common smells (using an orange or other strong smelling fruit) while their eyes are closed II OPTIC , III OCULOMOTOR, IV TROCHLEAR, VI ABDUCENS Function- these are all vision nerves , motor control and sensation of the eye muscles, movement of major eye muscles Assess: oculomotor by having kid follow a bright colored object or their fav toy Check vision fields and acuity in older kids Pupil reaction w penlight- same as adult V TRIGEMINAL Function- mastication muscles and facial sensation Assess: note strength of suck on pacifier , thumb or bottle In older children , assess strength of bite and ability to feel light touch on face VII FACIAL Function- facial muscles, salivation, taste Assess- symmetry of facial expressions For infant- look at them when they cry or smile spontaneously Assess taste by asking them to differentiate different tastes (salt, sugar, sour) VIII ACOUSTIC Function- hearing Assess- infant; note response to voice In older children – use whisper test, webber or rinne IX GLOSSOPHARYNGEAL, X VAGUS Fucntion- motor impulses to heart and other organs , swallowing, and gag reflex Assess- gag reflex and swallowing tested in adults Check time of last feeding to avoid vomiting in the infant XI ACCESORY Function- impulses to muscles of pharynx and shoulders Assess- note symmetry of head when sitting XII HYPOGLOSSAL Function- motor impulses to tongue and skeletal muscles Assess- infants; note spontaneous tongue movements
