AMBLYOPIA Refers to poor visual development in an eye w otherwise normal structural development Develops within first decade of life- if UNTREATED it’s the MSOT COMMON cause of vision loss in kids and young adults Vision is reduced in one eye bc the eye and brain are not working simultaneously The eyes fight to focus differently bc of their differences in visual acuity which equals ONE EYE STRONGER THAN THE OTHER → AKA LAZY EYE ** Can be caused by another d/o ; strabismus, differences in visual acuity between both eyes, astigmatism, eye trauma, ptosis, cataract Also if not tx, kids will have worsening vision in bad eye and strain on the good eye which will worsen that eye also → can end up w blindness in one or both eyes * Tx focus is to strengthen the weaker eye→ through use of eye patch, atropine eye drops in the better eye, vision therapy, eye muscle sx. Assessment *begin testing for visual acuity by 3 yrs of age Asymmetry of the corneal light reflex Nursing management Encourage compliance w patching of the eye; patching of the BETTER eye for several hrs a day helps the eye w poorer vision to be used and it promotes vision development of that eye Atropine drops- also in the BETTER eye result in blurring of that eye, which also encourages use and development of the weaker eye Promote eye safety * → to reduce r/o blindness
