Studying the Brain Lesioning (damage) studies: real accidents that are studied ● Ex. Phineas Gage: metal bar that went through his skull and survived but his personality changed ● Harder to come across these as they are real studies ● Not commonly used today Imaging: used for noninvasive research and finding diagnosis, show how remembering memories differ in brain from seeing things in present Ex. (memory vs. Perception) Types of Methods: Invasive Techniques: - Deep brain Stimulation - Electrodes in specific deep-brain areas to impulse generator that sends impulses to implanted electrodes to stimulate specific brain areas - Used to treat Parkinson’s, Seizures, chronic pain, depression Noninvasive techniques CT: STRUCTURAL - shows different layers of brain or other parts, x-ray around to see MRI: STRUCTURAL, - whole-body machine with magnets around EEG: FUNCTION - (sensors on head) to see what is happening in brain, records levels of electrical activity under different parts of brain cells/neurons in this area affected based on the stimulus (happy, sad, gross scene) PET: FUNCTION - look for glucose metabolism injected with mild radioactive trait that attaches to glucose - to see what parts of brain are expending more energy/activity/active based on the different colors shown on brain FMRI: FUNCTION - different areas lit up to show functioning of blood flow at higher levels
