ROSHAAN AMEER DISCUSSION PUBLIC SPEAKING "He stood on the platform, one hand lightly resting on a table, talked for what seemed to be about 20 minutes, concluded, and sat down. When the student looked at his watch, he found to his astonishment that he had been listening for an hour and a half!" (pg.232 Ch. 13). This is important to me because I think one of my biggest weaknesses is delivery. I think that delivery has always been difficult when speaking in general and I don't think that I delivered my speech that well. One time, a student was so captivated by a speaker's comments that he completely lost track of the passing of time, providing a stunning illustration of the power that can be harnessed through effective public speaking. The speaker was positioned on a platform, and at the beginning of their talk, they had one hand delicately leaning on a table. When the student glanced at his watch, he was surprised to see that he had been attending for an hour and a half already, even though it only seemed like 20 minutes had passed since the lecture had begun. This incident exemplifies the transformative impact that effective public speaking can have on an audience when delivered by a skilled public speaker. When a speaker is able to grab the attention of their audience and keep it for a prolonged period of time, they have the ability to genuinely motivate, instruct, and convince those who are listening to them. Storytelling, comedy, and emotional appeal are three of the most powerful tools that powerful speakers use to keep their audiences interested and involved in what they have to say. Successful speakers understand how to construct their message in a way that resonates with their audience. It goes without saying that not every speaker will be able to hold the attention of their audience for a full hour and a half. However, even the most inexperienced presenters are capable of making a significant impression on their audiences by incorporating elements of successful speaking, such as a clear and captivating message, an engaging delivery, and consideration to the requirements and preferences of their audience. The secret is to put in plenty of practise, be well-prepared, and work hard to keep improving one's public speaking abilities.
